The National Bank of the Republic of Uzbekistan for Foreign Economic Activity was established under the Decree of the first President of Uzbekistan, I. Karimov in September 1991.
The mission of the Bank states the tasks of creating a financial institution capable of servicing foreign trade operations of domestic companies at the level of international standards, helping to increase the country's export potential, attracting foreign investments and advanced technologies to the Uzbek economy. In fact, today the NBU is a "visiting card" of the country's banking system in international financial markets. Relying on a conservative, balanced policy, the Bank has developed effective mechanisms of management and growth strategy. These allowed the bank to confidently and dynamically develop, having achieved a solid reputation of a professional financial institution, a reliable partner of its clients.
The Bank has become an active engine for market transformation. Optimally combining the functions of the bank project financing, universal commercial, investment and savings banks, the NBU contributes to the successful entry of Uzbekistan into the market economy.
The history of the Bank reflects the dynamics of the country's economic development during the years of independence. Leadership of the NBU in the banking services market, its sustainable development, stable growth of the deposit base, wide attraction of foreign credit lines contributed to the active participation of the NBU in financing investment projects in virtually all sectors of the economy of Uzbekistan.
Over the years of independence, the Bank has financed projects that ensure a deep restructuring of the economy. These are projects of extraction and processing of oil and metals, agricultural engineering, chemistry and production of mineral fertilizers, textile industry, processing of agricultural products, tourism, air and rail transport, communications, small business development and private entrepreneurship, and many other projects that form a new face of the Uzbek economy.
In the conditions of intensive development of the banking sector of the country, the National Bank was the first in Uzbekistan and Central Asia to switch to a new chart of accounts that meets international accounting standards. In 2004, the introduction of the automated banking system Globus, chosen by the Bank during an open international tender was completed. At present, the Globus ABS operates the 6 largest branches of the Bank in Tashkent.
90 branches of the Bank are located in all economically important regions of the country, providing a wide range of services. Also, the Bank has a subsidiary of Asia-Invest Bank in Moscow.
The National Bank carries out a wide range of activities covering almost all areas of domestic and international banking operations and develops modern banking technologies that allow providing banking services at the level of international standards.
In order to use the credit lines provided, the Bank pursues a purposeful policy of expanding and strengthening its relations with international financial organizations, foreign banks and export credit agencies by providing corporate services:
The National Bank serves over 70% of the total foreign trade turnover of Uzbekistan, with such mechanisms of export-import crediting as: issuing guarantees for the return of advance payments, execution of contracts; discounting of bills; factoring; direct lending by the bank to Uzbek exporters; project financing; export-import financing with participation of export-credit agencies. Letters of credit are practiced with a deferred payment, converting upon delivery and sale of goods by the client on a consignment basis;
Project financing by the National Bank is carried out to finance investment projects that envisage the construction of new ones, modernization or technical re-equipment (including the purchase of equipment, construction and installation processes, etc.), as well as the purchase of a part of raw materials and materials necessary to ensure the normal operation of production facilities and services.
Loans are designed to finance the most important investment projects that ensure structural changes in priority sectors of the economy. Most of the credit lines of such major international financial institutions are attracted without the provision of direct government guarantees on a commercial basis;

Currently, the National Bank issues international Visa Classic and Visa Electron cards for its customers, microprocessor cards for local settlements in the national currency.
